Back to Basics
September marks the start of the new academic year for schools across the U.S., and here at ML, we are using this new beginning to get "back to basics".
In this month's edition of the newsletter, we wanted to keep things simple. So, we've decided to pare down the newsletter to feature the two aspects of ML that make us stand out among English language schools: our teachers and students! We hope you enjoy this new format.
Stay tuned later this month as we will announce our exciting winter holiday promotion!
Meet the Teachers: Jason Brooks
ML: How did you get started in the field?
JB: When I was 22, I went to Spain for what was supposed to be a one month vacation...instead, I stayed almost six years. Teaching English became the best and most enjoyable way for me to make a living while being abroad.
ML: Are you from NYC? What do you love/hate about the city?
JB: I was born and raised in Philadelphia, but NYC has been part of my life since I was a kid. NYC is still the most diverse and exciting city in the U.S., but I'm worried (as are many people) that it's becoming homogenized and suburban. It's basically lost the grit that had always appealed to me here. It's also becoming less and less affordable for people who don't make a few thousand dollars a year. This is really worrisome...and I think unsustainable.
ML: What are your hobbies and interests outside of the classroom?
JB: I like activities that get me outdoors: hiking, climbing, the beach...I read a lot: fiction, sci-fi, crime, philosophy, psychology and history. I watch a lot of films too, especially film noir and weird French stuff.
ML: Best ML memory/teaching moment?
JB: That's hard to say...there's been a lot of them. I think the best moments are when a student from my TOEFL class writes me to say that they've aced the exam and have been accepted into the university of their choice.
ML: Any advice for our students preparing for TOEFL?
JB: TOEFL isn't so much a test of English as it is a test of strategy and time management. You need to get yourself familiar with the structure and understand how to answer questions in the most time-efficient manner. You can never walk right into the test center and take it without prior knowledge of what the test looks like. You need to spend a lot of time reviewing the test and practicing over and over. That's why taking a TOEFL class helps.

ML: How did you find out about Manhattan Language?
JC: A friend of mine in NYC mentioned ML, so I decided to check it out.
ML: Can you describe your hometown Lima, Peru to us? How is it similar/different from NYC?
JC: The capital city of Peru, Lima, is a big city located in the middle of the country. It's easy for us to go to the beach often, and Peruvian food is amazing! Lima is also a place rich in history and many tourist attractions. The differences between my hometown and NYC is the people and transportation...NYC has people from all around the world, and the traffic in Lima is terrible because we have no public transportation.
ML: Could you tell us about your experience with TOEFL before and after taking ML's TOEFL Program with Jason?
JC: The TOEFL test was a way for me to measure my improvement in English...it was also necessary for me to take it since I'm applying for an MBA program in 2016. Before coming to ML, I had never taken the test before, so I took the TOEFL Program to get the necessary preparation. After finishing the program, I felt completely ready for the TOEFL and took the test the next day. I got a score of 97, which was exactly my goal when I went to NYC!
ML: Tell us about your overall experience at Manhattan Language. Would you recommend our school to other students?
JC: I have really good memories of NYC, and ML was a big part of this experience because it was the place I learned English and where I met a lot of beautiful people who I will never forget. I would recommend this school to others because of its commitment to students. You can feel the concern of the staff and the teachers about the learning of the students.
ML: What's next?
JC: My future plans are finding a job in the financial field, preferably out of my country...however, you never know what can appear. So I have to be prepared for everything!
